Rock Out with your Hawk Out Report: Week 4

'Hawks OLB Jarvis Moss [94] gets to Rams Rookie QB Jimmy Clausen [7] for one of Seattle's four sacks in the game. This one
causing a fumble setting up a Seahawks TD.

Heavy Dose of S-Jax and Big Passing Plays Help Push 'Hawks To 2-2

St. Louis, MO (AP) - Good defense and a couple TD passes from Matt Hasselbeck to new 'Hawks WR Chad Ochocinco built and early cushion for Seattle heading into halftime. Unfotunately, the 'Hawks didn't bring that same effort into the second half, and were outscored 23-0 on the way to being closed out in St. Louis. "We've played well at the QB position and in our secondary all season so far," said 'Hawks coach Pete Carroll, "But they both let us down in this one."

Hasselbeck, despite tossing two TD passes, completed just 44% of his passes, and had 16 other passes end up being batted down by Ram defenders, even though he saw little pressure all game and was not sacked. "We look to Matt as our leader on offense, so when he finishes out a game the way he did tonight...we don't have much of a chance," said Carroll. The 'Hawks split carries in the game between LenDale White and Leon Washington, and the two combined for 78 yards on just 19 carries [just over 4.1 YPC]. "We should have stuck more to the run throughout the game, especially on 1st and 2nd downs. But we got away from our gameplan," Said Carroll. As mentioned earlier, WR Chad Ochocinco showed well in his Seahawk debut, catching two TDs on four catches for 74 yards.

Seattle's front seven was great in the pass game, but terrible down the stretch in the run game. DE Lawrence Jackson [2] and OLB's Jarvis Moss and Aaron Curry all got to Jimmy Clausen for sacks during the game. But when it came down to crunch time, the front seven was unable to stop the run and allowed St. Louis to run the clock down. "It was ugly," said Carroll, "When we needed our D to step up and get a stop late, we couldn't get it done." FS Earl Thomas, one of the 'Hawks first-round draft picks, led the game with nine tackles [1 FL], but was injured on the final play of the game and may possibly miss the teams next game.

Seattle heads into the bye week following the loss.

Rock Out with your Hawk Out Report: Week 3

WR Chad Ochocinco [85] will reunite with former teammate T.J. Houshmandzadeh in Seattle. The two were also teammates at OSU.

Ochocinco Finally His Wish, Gets Dealt to 'Hawks

Renton, WA (AP) - The Seahawks announced today that they have acquired WR Chad Ochocinco from the Cincinatti Bengals. Ochocinco, who has threatened holdouts prior to the past several seasons, finally did so this season. The ninth-year vet from Oregon State University had played every season of his professional carrer with the Bengals, but after carrying his holdout into the regular season this year, the team decided to cut ties with the Pro Bowl WR.

The 'Hawks sent second-year speedster WR Deon Butler and the teams' third-round pick in the 2011 draft for Ochocinco and the Bengal's sixth-rounder. "We weren't happy with our production out of our receiving unit, and we found out that Chad was available, so we took a run at grabbing him," said 'Hawks GM Corey Smith, "It's not really been in our plans to go after veteran talent, especially when it involves dealing younger players and draft picks to get them. But we felt like this was a good move for out team right now."

Ochocinco will be inserted immediately into the starting lineup this week against the St. Louis Rams. He will be re-teaming up with former Oregon State and Bengal teammate T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

Rock Out with your Hawk Out Report: Week 2

'Hawks OLB Aaron Curry [59] got to QB Kyle Orton [8] during the game. The second sack he's had in as many weeks.

Tale of Two Halves Results in 2-0 Start For Seattle

Denver, CO (AP) - Things didn't look good for the 'Hawks heading into the locker room at halftime, but halftime adjustments after a rocky first half led to a blowout win in the Mile-High city. "We got after it in the second half, after looking a little sluggish in the first half," said 'Hawks head coach Pete Carroll. Seattle was able to capitalize on three of four second-half Bronco turnovers on the way to a 44 second half points.

QB Matt Hasselbeck played a very efficient game, but also got some help from his WR's who came up with huge runs after the catch. "Matt was hitting the open guy, and that guy was making the catch. That's all you can really ask for," said Carroll. Hasselbeck finished with 290 yards and four touchdown, on 60% passing. HB LenDale White followed up his stellar Seahawk debut with another effective day, this time carrying for 112 yards and a score on 25 carries. "He didn't have a long run to bloat his numbers this time, he just was on the grind all day," said Carroll. WR TJ Houshmandzadeh led the game with 8 catches for 151 yards and two scores, bringing his season TD total to 3. WR Reggie Williams also pulled in a Hasselback TD pass, and racked up 94 yards through the air.

The 'Hawks were able to get good pressure on the quarterback for the second straight week, and brought Broncos QB Kyle Orton down four times in the game [Tatupu, Wilson, Bowman, and Curry all had one]. ILB's Lofa Tatupu and David Hawthorne set the tone all game long and combined for 12 tackles, 3 for losses, and 1 sack. Rookie FS Earl Thomas snatched his first-career INT, and was joind in the pick party by CB Josh Wilson and Rookie OLB Navorro Bowman. "Our D played really well in the second half. But I can't really say that for the first half. And giving up 28 points won't win us too many games," said Carroll.

The 'Hawks [2-0] come back home next week to play host to another former AFC-West rival, San Diego.

Rock Out with your Hawk Out Report: Week 1

'Hawks HB LenDale White [24] made the most of his debut with the team in week 1, rushing for 145 yards and a score.

'Hawks Hold Off Rival 'Niners In Season Opener

Seattle, WA (AP) - New 'Hawks head coach Pete Carroll and co. couldn't have asked for a better situation: Opening day, beautiful northwest weather, and a matchup with division-rival San Francisco. Out of the gate the 'Hawks looked like a seasoned veteran team, dominating on both sides of the ball and taking a commanding 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Then 'Niner HB Frank Gore began to take over, and the SF defense started to look more like what was expected, and San Fran came all the way back to score 24 unanswered to take the lead in the fourth. "We knew when we jumped out to that lead that it wasn't time to take the foot off of the gas," said Carroll, "They turned the tables on us in a big way, and we showed some resolve in being able to grab the reins back on get the Win." The 'Hawks took the lead with under a minute left in the game on a 35-yard Steven Haushka game-winning FG.

QB Matt Hasselbeck did not finish the game with eye-popping numbers, but he was instrumental in getting his team the win after tossing two TD's in the first quarter. Hasselbeck finished the day with 119 yards and the two TDs. In his first game as a Seahawk after being traded from Tennessee, HB LenDale White carried a big part of the workload for the 'Hawks, with 145 yards and a TD [68-yard scamper on the second play from scrimmage] in the game. "He came into came in-shape, and he looked good out there today. Kind of reminded me of his college days," said Carroll. WR's T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Deon Butler both caught TD passes in the game.

'Niners HB Frank Gore could not be contained by the 'Hawks defense, as he ran all over them for 189 yards and three TDs. "He's a great back, and he has a history of lighting up this team," said Carroll, "Hopefully in the future we can put a stop to that, but it didn't happen today." The passing game was another story, with Seattle holding QB Alex Smith to 42% passing, forcing one INT, and not allowing a completion until under two minutes left in the first half. "We got after [Smith] today. We didn't bring him down for sacks very much, but his jersey definitely didn't stay clean," said Carroll. Rookie DE Greg Hardy and second-year OLB Aaron Curry got to Smith for the only two Seattle sacks. Newcomer OLB Jarvis Moss led the 'Hawks with 6 tackles, and nickel back Josh Wilson forced the lone 'Hawk turnover.

Next up for the 'Hawks is a trip the the Mile-High city to visit the Denver Broncos.

12th Man Rising | Offseason Report

'Hawks Add Several Via Free Agency, Draft

Renton, WA (AP) - After two back-to-back terrible seasons in the Emerald City, the front office and fans alike have become antsy. But after a new Coaching Staff headlined by former Southern Cal head coach Pete Carroll, and a new front office lead in GM Corey Smith were brought in, optimism is the word for the 12th Man.

"The city deserves a better team than what we have put out there the last couple of years, that's for sure," said Smith, "We had one hell of an opportunity to get better this offseason with our [salary] cap and draft situations." Early in the offseason Smith took the opportunity to shed three cap-burdening contracts from the roster [WR D. Branch, OLB L. Hill, CB M. Trufant] and free up some additional cap space. Smith also inherited nine draft picks in the 2010 draft, including two first-rounders. When all was said and done, the 'Hawks made seven picks, three in the first round, and all of them in the first 5 rounds.

Leading to the draft, the 'Hawks were able to address a few needs. The team inked CB's Marcus McCauley and Cedric Griffin to three-year deals, both of which are expected to compete for starting jobs immediately. They also signed third-year Kicker Steven Hauschka, who is expected to be the successor to Olindo Mare. The 'Hawks also came to terms on a four-year deal with former first-overall pick, QB JaMarcus Russell. "JaMarcus' time in Oakland was a complete disaster, he knows that and we know that," said Smith, "This change of scenery may be good for him. And he will have the opportunity to compete with Matt [Hasselbeck] and Charlie [Whitehurst] for the snaps."

The 'Hawks also addressed two needs via trades. Former University of Oregon standout safety Patrick Chung was acquired along with a 2nd round pick for DT Brandon Mebane. And OLB Jarvis Moss was aquired from Denver for a 2011 fouth-round pick.

Smith and Carroll's first drafts gave them both something to hang their hats on. Four projected week-one starters, one that will get significant playing time, and two project players. "We're happy to have been in the positions we were to improve our team as much as we did through the draft," said Smith. Here are the 'Hawks selections:

1.13 | OT Russell Okung | 6'5" 307lbs | Oklahoma State
There were OT's in the draft that were bigger, stronger, and/or more athletic, but none of them were more polished that Okung. And with the retirement of Seahawk Great Walter Jones, Okung will have very large shoes to fill, and he should be able to do it. Okung is more than able to pass protect, as well as create running lanes. He will start at Right Tackle immediately.

1.14 | FS Earl Thomas | 5'11" 202lbs | Texas
The 'Hawks have lacked a playmaker in their secondary for some time now. Hopefully with the selection of Thomas, that will change. Thomas is a ball-hawking safety that had the knack for the big play as a Longhorn. He may be considered slightly undersize for a safety, but is not a liability in run support, and has more than enough athleticism to hold his own in the passing game. He will start at Free Safety immediately.

1.30 | DE Greg Hardy | 6'4" 281lbs | Mississippi
Coach Carroll is converting the defense to a 3-4 scheme, so the selection of Hardy was a necessity. Hardy has the size and strength of a DT, but also has sufficient athleticism, which makes him an ideal 3-4 DE. He will be expected to draw enough attention to himself to allow OLB Aaron Curry to come off of the edge in blitz situations. He will start at Left Defensive End immediately.

2.26 | OT Jared Veldheer | 6'8" 312lbs | Hillsdale College (MI)
What the hell is Hillsdale College? Don't know, but GM Smith will be sending his scouts out there from now on. Veldheer obviously didn't face great competition week in and week out, and still needs to learn the finer things of the OT spot, but physically he looks great. He's not as strong or as polished as Okung, but for a 6'8" 312lb guy, he's very athletic. He will start at Left Tackle immediately.

3.18 | CB Kevin Thomas | 6'0" 192lbs | Southern California
Thomas is a product of Coach Carroll's from USC. He's got good size, decent speed and strength, and has a great "make up" ability. He will spend time at the nickel and dime spots, as well as contribute heavily on special teams this season.

5.02 | OLB Navorro Bowman | 6'1" 242lbs | Penn State
Penn State has produced a lot of talent at the linebacker spot, and hopefully Bowman will develop in to a solid GridIron player. He's got good size, but will need to work on his athletic abilities in order to get there. He will back up at Outside Linebacker, and contribute on special teams.

5.30 | FS Morgan Burnett | 6'2" 209lbs | Georgia Tech
GM Smith was happy to find the third-rated FS on his board at pick 158. Burnett has pretty much all of the tools needed to be a starting safety in this league, if he can prove that he's athletic as he looked on tape. He'll back up Earl Thomas and contribute on special teams this season.

All Seahawks, veterans and rookies, will report to the teams first mandatory mini-camp this weekend. Fans will be allowed to attend the practices at the teams new facility on Lake Washington in Renton.
