Packers Release 2011 Lineup |
Green Bay, Wisconsin (AP) - After a disappointing playoff loss against the future Superbowl winners, the Packers re-tooled some positions, and again appear to be one of the favorite for the 2011 Superbowl.
Despite reports that the Packers are too close to the cap and cannot afford top players after making trades for guys like Peyton Manning, the Packers have been active as ever this off-season.
In the draft, the Packers added starters at MLB (Ben Sloan), FS (Kyle Nelson), WR (Cameron Shaw), and FB (Warren Lyons).
In free agency, the Packers showed just how deep their wallets were. RT D'Brichshaw Ferguson was signed to a max contract, which will pay him just over 113 million in the next 7 seasons. He received a 45 million bonus. The Packers didnt stop there. Veteran corner Ike Taylor, coming off of a terrific season in Pittsburgh, was given 13 million over 2 seasons. Veteran OLB Joey Porter was brought in to upgrade the weak link of the team, its linebackers. And most recently, RE Richard Seymour, who put up great numbers last year, was given a 1 year contract for 7 million. Finally, the Packers also signed RB Darren McFadden to backup Beanie Wells. McFadden will provide the packers with some speed as a change of pace back, and also could get looks in the passing game.
The Packers hope that all these rentals can shore up the defense for a season. Next year, the packers have their own 1st, along with 3 2nd rounders, which will likely be used to replace the veteran free agents that were signed this offseason.
LINEUP:
QB - Peyton Manning [99]
-Manning is coming off an all-pro season, and we believe he has a few more of those left before he calls it quits. Look for another 5000 yard season and 45+ TDs out of Peyton.
RB - Beanie Wells [86], Darren McFadden [90]
-Last year, Beanie had an above average season. This year, the Packers hope that the young RB is ready to break out. The offense added another toy in Darren McFadden, and his game-breaking ability should be a perfect compliment to Wells' bruising style.
FB - Warren Lyons [80]
-At 6'5, 269lbs, Lyons is one of the biggest fullbacks in the league. Lyons provides Peyton with another target, and also has the speed and size to open up holes for Beanie and D-Mac on the ground.
WR - Taylor Price [85], Cameron Shaw [76]
-Price just finished a record breaking season, and we believe he can re-break those records on his 2nd go around. Last year, the Packers lacked a legit possession receiver, as Santana Moss lined up opposite Price. Moss is gone, and in comes in a 6'4, first round pick. Although Shaw is raw, Peyton will surely look his way and force him to learn the game quickly.
TE - JerMichael Finley [87], Leonard Pope [80]
-Finley quietly had a dominant season for a TE, picking up 84 catches for 1147 yards and 13 TDs. The upcoming season will prove whether or not it was a fluke, or if Finley really might be the best TE in the league. At 6'8, Leonard Pope is also a nice target for Peyton, and proved last year to be a great run blocker.
LT - Jason Peters [97]
LG - Daryn Colledge [91]
C - Scott Wells [87]
RG - Mike Pollak [91]
RT - D'Brickshaw Ferguson [90]
-The Packers offensive line features 3 of the most athletic lineman in the league in Ferguson, Pollak, and Colledge. Jason Peters, the Packers big name UFA signing last season, played excellent at RT, and will now be moved to LT to face larger lineman. The weak link, Scott Wells, will need to have a better season than a year ago. Overall, this is an athletic line that can both run and pass block. The addition of Ferguson makes this unit a big upgrade over last years unit.
DE - Richard Seymour [96], Johhny Jolly [97]
-The Packers will use a 4-3, but their ends are not your usual 4-3 ends. With a pair of 300lb DEs, the Packers hope that these guys can offer some excellent run defense, and help collapse the pocket and add in some sacks. Jolly had 11 sacks a season ago, but the Packers are expecting a better all-around season from the 320lb left end.
DT - B.J. Raji [91], Geno Atkins [84]
-The strength of the Packers defense. The 342lb Raji had 11 sacks last year, while helping boost a terrific run defense. Geno Atkins, the Packers 2nd round pick from a year ago, could only be stopped by injuries last season. Despite playing just over half a season, Atkins had 7 sacks a year ago. This year, the Packers expect both DTs to approach double digits in sacks.
LB - Joey Porter [86], Ben Sloan [78], Leroy Hill [83]
-This is a weaker link of the Packers defense. Hill and Porter are veteran OLBs, and the team hopes that they can provide a 1 year stop gap at OLB, while the Packers look for a more long-term solution. Ben Sloan, a 2nd round pick this year, will try to replace AJ Hawk in the middle.
CB - Dominque Rod-Cromartie [91], Ike Taylor [85], Charles Woodson [95]
-This is probably the position the Packers have the most skill and depth at. Rod-Cromartie, who had an injury riddled season last year, looks to play a full, successful season this year. Charles Woodson, who was an all-pro a year ago, is in a competition for the #2 corner role with Ike Taylor, but early reports show that Ike Taylor, who the Packers just signed, will be given the starting spot. All 3 corners will be given a big role in this defense.
S - Kyle Nelson [82], Adrian Wilson [94]
-Two completely different players. Nelson, a 1st round pick, has the speed and the size to be a difference maker at safety. He will be surrounded by many veteran defensive backs, and will be allowed to roam wild in the 4-3 or 46 defense. Wilson, who is likely playing his last season, is essentially a linebacker playing safety. Despite being on his last leg, Wilson has the size and skill to finish his career with yet another pro-bowl season.
So there you have it. The Packers roster boasts 9 new starters, and a roster with more depth. Although many believe the Packers are in cap trouble, management has assured fans that the Packers will be players in many upcoming free agent markets. The Packers lineup currently has 5 players making more then 7m a year, with Peyton Manning (14m) and D'Brickshaw Ferguson (10.3m) lead the way. The Packers rosters features a combination of rookies and veterans, and everyone in the organization fully expects another SB run. |

Packers Squeak By Skins; Prepare for Undefeated Dolphins |
Green Bay, Wisconsin (AP) - The Green Bay Packers must have been caught looking ahead to the match-up against the Dolphins, as they looked unmotivated and showed a lack of effort against the Washington Redskins.
The Packers had 10-0 and 24-10 leads against the Redskins, but shaky defense and inconsistent offense led to a collapse in the 4th quarter, in which the Packers were able to barely hang on, and win by a score of 27-26. This is the first time this season in which the Packers haven't won by at least 20 points.
Peyton Manning had 362 passing yards and a couple TDs, but was off point all day long, completing just 17 of 39 passes. RB Beanie Wells couldnt do much better, as he had just 62 rush yards on 20 carries, although he added 3 catches for 84 yards. The biggest reason that the Packers couldnt put away the Redskins was the pack of consistency. Despite lots of yards, the Packers were just 1 of 13 on 3rd downs.
Defensively, it was even worse. Although the Packers defense ranks first in red zone defense and sacks, and 2nd in turnovers and rush defense, they are dead last in pass defense, allowing over 300 yards a game. That pattern continued tonight, as Donovan McNabb threw for 430 yards against the Packers injured defense. Cornerback Charles Woodson, who has been outstanding this season, completely laid an egg, as he had 12 catches allowed, and no deflections, although he added an interception. The loss of Dominique Rod-Cromartie has clearly hurt the Packers.
Despite a very lackluster performance, the Packers were able to win by a point, and showed that they could compete even during an off-day. Next up for the Packers, the 4-0 Miami Dolphins, in which could possibly be a Super Bowl preview.
This appears to be a classic game of offense vs defense, as the Dolphins have thus far been incredible on defense, including dominating performances against elite QBs such as Brett Favre and Tom Brady. The Dolphins allow just 12.3 points per game, and have the best rush defense and 3rd best total defense in the league. If the Packers are going to win, they will need to play at a much higher level against the Packers than they did against the Redskins. After this week, only 1 undefeated team will remain.
The Packers have had several breakout performances throughout the season, which deserve to be mentioned. DT BJ Raji leads the league in sacks, with 7 sacks and 2 forced fumbles in 5 games this season. Raji has recorded atleast 1 sack in every game. Offensively, TE Jermichael Finley may be the surprise of the league. Everyone expected the decently athletic TE to do well in this system, but with the WRs being inconsistent, Finley has risen his game to a level that no one believed was possible. With 34 catches for 512 yards and 6 TDs this season, Finley leads the Packers receivers in every major category. Not only does Finley also lead TEs in that department, he also is 4th among all receivers in both receiving yards and receptions. Obviously the Packers dont expect Finley to keep up his pace of 5 catches for 100+ yards and a TD, but so far, Finley has been the key reason that Peyton Manning is among top rated QBs in the league. |

Packers Blow Out Bears; Lose Star Player |
Green Bay, Wisconsin (AP) - Another week, another blowout victory for the Packers. The Packers traveled to Chicago to take on the Bears, and with some motivation from the trash talk of the silly bears GM, The packers easily came out on top, with a 37-17 final.
Among the players of the day were Peyton Manning, Dominique Rod-Cromartie, and Johnny Jolly. Peyton was slightly worse then his first two games, but still on point, as he completed 24/43 for 275 yards. Peyton also threw 3 TDs and his only INT of the season, as he finished the day with a QB rating of 88.6. LE Jolly also had a great night, as the big man took advantage of a weak Evan Mathis. Jolly finished the night with 3 tackles, a tackle for a loss, 2 sacks, and 2 passes defended. Rookie WR Taylor Price only had 56 yards and a TD, but he managed to keep moving the chain, as he notched 7 receptions, bumping his league leading total to 26.
The star of the night, and probably the biggest story this week, was cornerback Dominique Rod-Cromartie. Today, Cromartie picked off Bulger, and returned it 80 yards for a score. He finished the afternoon with 4 tackles, a tackle for a loss, an INT, a TD, and 2 PDs. Cromartie, who was came into the season with massive expectations after being traded for, has without a doubt met them. He has picked off a pass in each of the first 3 games, scored a TD, and has 5 PDs compared to 5 CTHA on the season. Unfortunately, DRC appears to have suffered a major injury, and will be sidelined for 8 weeks with a dislocated elbow. This is a major injury for the Packers, as Rod-Cromartie is arguably the Packers best player, at the most important position. The Packers expected Cromartie to learn a lot this season playing next to veterans such as Al Harris and Charles Woodson, but instead of progressing on the field, it appears Cromartie will be sidelined for at least half the season.
Veteran cornerback Al Harris has been informed that he will be named starter until Cromartie comes back, and the Packers may look at certain UFAs to fill a need at corner.
Next week, the 3-0 Packers host the 0-3 Lions. On paper, it seems like an easy game, but with CB Rod-Cromartie out, and DT Atkins also being a big possibility of not playing, the Packers cannot take this game from granted. Despite losing, the Lions have a terrific pass offense, and WR Calvin Johnson must be licking his chops knowing the guy who was supposed to cover him is out. Looks like Al Harris and Charles Woodson will have a lot on their shoulders for the next couple months. |

Peyton Leads Packers to 2-0 Start |
Green Bay, Wisconsin (AP) - One week after winning 45-19, the Packers opened up their home opener with a 44-17 thrashing of the Bills.
Peyton Manning played outstanding, as he connected with a pair of youngsters all day. Rookie WR Taylor Price had 12 receptions, while 2nd year TE Jermichael followed up his 100 yard opening day performance with 3 TDs on the day. Defensively, the Packers relied on their corners again, as Al Harris, Dominique Rod-Cromartie, and Charles Woodson all had outstanding games.
The special teams were shaky again, as kicker Mason Crosby missed two FGs for the second straight week. As the the games get more important and tighter, Crosby will need to start making big kicks.
Game Balls On Offense
QB Peyton Manning = 28/43, 304 Yards, 3 Touchdowns, 0 Interceptions, 109.1 QB Rating
WR Taylor Price = 12 Receptions, 142 Yards
TE Jermichael Finley = 9 Receptions, 93 Yards, 3 Touchdowns
Game Balls On Defense
CB Charles Woodson = 6 Tackles, 2 FF, 1 INT, 2 PDs, 1 TD
CB Dominique Rod-Cromartie = 3 Tackles, 1 TD, 2 PDs
CB Al Harris = 3 Tackles, 3 Sacks, 1 FR, 1 PD
DT BJ Raji = 4 Tackles, 2 Sacks, 1FF
The Packers expected to have a very competitive offense, but the defense is currently exceeding expectations, and the main reason for the two blowout victories. Despite allowing a lot of yards, mostly through the air, the Packers defense currently leads the league with sacks (12) and forced turnovers ( . If the Peyton Manning to Taylor Price connection keeps it up, and the defense can keep creating turnovers and making plays, the Packers will be on pace for a terrific season that will make fans forget about Favre.
Next week, the 2-0 Packers travel to Chicago to take on the 1-1 Bears. A win against the Bears would give the Packers a very comfortable early division lead. |
