Colts First Quarter. |
The Colts are 3-1 to start off the season. Most wouldnt be surprised with these headlines.....except that they dont have the all world Manning on their roster now. The Colts have played very well defensively and their running game has helped take the load off of rookie QB Tony Pike this season.
Highlights of the first quarter of the Colts Season:
Donald Brown - 6th in the league in rushing
Pierre Garcon - Leads league with 33 receptions. 8th in yards with 418
4th overall defense (7th Passing; 17th Rushing)
9th is scoring against defense
4th in rushing offense.
Tony Pike is the biggest surprise so far this season. He has gotten more accurate every week and has 5 tds and 4 ints on the young season. 3 ints came in one game. Week 4 was his breakout game but we have to remember that he is still a rookie and he will have more struggles. The Colts are happy where they sit and they arent going away quietly in the AFC South. |

Indianapolis Colts Draft Review. |
The Indianapolis Colts only had two picks on day one following a trade earlier in the day to bring in a couple cornerbacks for their second round picks. The Colts had two glaring needs at Quarterback and Middle Linebacker and all analysts thought those would be the teams selections with their two picks.
Pick 1.23 OLB Sean Weatherspoon 6'1 239 Missouri
Sean has a great combination of Strength Speed and Tackling ability. Sean led the Tigers in tackles the last three seasons. One scouting reports said this about Sean:
Good size and bulk --- Very athletic --- Great speed --- Has a burst and really closes in a hurry --- Quick and agile --- Solid instincts --- Reliable tackler and a powerful hitter --- Has sideline-to-sideline range ... Could project either outside or inside at the next level --- A true play-maker who always seems to be around the action --- Fantastic all-around player with an outstanding blend of physical tools and elite intangibles.
GM Stepp was ecstatic to see Weatherspoon still available at pick 23. He was the second rated linebacker on the Colts board and brings more youth and talent to the defense.
With pick 1.31 the Colts had a decision to make.........Colt McCoy or Tony Pike. They had scouted these two quarterbacks extensively over the past week. After going back and forth on the decision they decided to select the guy they thought would be the better overall guy to lead the Colts for the next 5 to 10 years.
1.31 QB Tony Pike 6'6 223 Cincinatti
GM Stepp said that Tony is a big strong QB that can see the field well and has huge potential to be a great QB in The Gridiron. Some may say he was selected way to early and this was a reach but I doubt he would have been around much longer if we would have had to wait until the 4th round to select this kid.
Scouting reports say that Pikes Height is a major plus and that he wont be deflected much by D-lineman. Pike needs to bulk up and he isnt the most mobile QB. Some have compared him to former Colts QB Peyton Manning but have said that hes not as statuesque as manning was. The big knock on Pike that most scouts report is that he doesnt have deep ball touch or very much athleticism. Even so the Colts feels with off season workouts and training camp, Pike can come in here and become a decent leader for this young offensive unit.
The Indianapolis Colts didnt have another pick until 4.31 after trading away their 3 other first day draft picks. The Colts had 3 day two picks and they are as follows:
4.31 DT Tyson Alualu 6'3 295 California
Alualu is a very athletic DT which fits right in with the Colts defensive line scheme. He does need to work on his strength a bit but the kid has huge potential and will be given a shot to win the starting DT job for the Colts this season. Tyson played every game at California and started the last 38. Uses leverage well and has the burst to get by bigger offensive lineman and he has a motor that never quits. The Colts are very happy to have picked him up so late in the draft.
5.31 HB Javarris James 6'0 215 Miami
James never was the feature back at Miami. He split most of his time but he was considered a very reliable short yardage back and a very good pass catcher out of the backfield. Has decent quickness and hits the holes with a nice burst. Hes the younger cousin of Edgerrin James but less talented. He will serve as a backup with the Colts and could be used in short yardage packages depending on his effectiveness there.
7.31 TE Brody Eldridge 6'5 261 Oklahoma
Brody doesnt have a lot of experience as a pass receiver but is a very good blocking TE that could do very well for the Colts in their run game. Eldridge played Center and Guard as well as Tight End during his senior season and teammate Trent Williams said that Brody was the best blocker on the team. Hes not very fast but he is strong and will catch balls in traffic but he uses his body to often to try and catch the ball. Good red-zone tight end because of his blocking ability and size.

Colts move Franchise Face |
Today GM Ken Stepp made a bold move and traded away Peyton Manning to the Green Bay Packers pending league approval. GM Stepp will be looking to add a QB through Free Agency the draft or both. This deal will strengthen the Colts linebackers.
The deal outlined that was sent to the league for approval was as follows:
Colts Send:
QB Peyton Manning
RG Mike Pollack
Pick 3.30
Packers Send:
ROLB Clay Matthews
LOLB Brad Jones
RG Josh Sitton
Pick 1.23
Pick 2.24
In other moves the Colts voided the contracts of the following players this offseason. GM Stepp said that they were great players but with the tightening of the salary cap they were casualties of the system:
MLB Gary Brackett
TE Dallas Clark |
