Painter Sucks, Bears Lose |
Chicago- As expected, backup quarterback Curtis Painter was pathetic, which resulted in the Bears losing 24-17. Painter was 6/21 for 40 yards.
The Bears defense played well enough to win, holding Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford to under 200 yards passing and intercepting the ball twice. It was one of Stafford's worst performances since the beginning of the league.
Bears OLB Lance Briggs suffered a sprained elbow and could be out several weeks. |

Bears Lose Starting QB for 8-10 weeks |
Chicago- Optimism has turned to despair in Chicago, as the Bears announced today that starting quarterback Rusty Smith would miss the next eight to ten weeks with a strained muscle in his lower back.
The Bears have signed veteran backup Josh McCown to come in as their second quarterback. McCown was 9/18 for 151 yards with two touchdowns last season as a backup for the Carolina Panthers.
Curtis Painter will now start for the Bears. Painter was 18/44 for 280 yards and one touchdown in the week one win over the Rams. He also threw two interceptions. Painter will need to protect the ball better if the Bears hope to have a successful first half of the season.
Backup defensive end Henry Melton was also injured in week one, breaking several ribs on a special teams play. He is expected to miss five to seven weeks. |

Bears 2011 Off Season Moves |
Bears 2011 Off Season
Draft and Rookie Signing
2.14: OG Wayne Carlton | 22 years | 6'5" | 285 lbs
Key Attributes: 68 SPD | 88 STR | 65 AGI | 68 ACC | 78 PBK | 80 RBK
It is well known that Bears GM David Maxwell prefers more athletic players over those with more skill, as skill can be learned, and athleticism cannot. Carlton was the third ranked linemen on the Bears board, and they were glad to pick up a much needed interior linemen with their first pick.
2.28: DT Chris Hamilton | 21 years | 6'3" | 306 lbs
Key Attributes: 67 SPD | 85 STR | 63 AGI| 73 ACC | 84 TAK
The Bears were happy with their current group of DT's but when Hamilton fell to them, they gladly took him and will give him a chance to start this season.
3.6: FB Tony Vales | 23 years | 6'2" | 217 lbs
Key Attributes: 83 SPD | 76 STR | 83 AGI | 84 ACC
The Bears needed to replace departing fullback Carey Davis. Vales is very raw, and will likely be groomed for the future behind another fullback.
3.28: K Marquis Campbell | 23 years | 6'3" | 241 lbs
Key Attributes: 52 AWR | 93 KPW | 85 KAC
Campbell was the product of auto draft, but he will be groomed for a few seasons behind Gould, and will eventually be the starting kicker.
4.12: HB Anthony Benson | 21 years | 5'10" | 192 lbs
Key Attributes: 94 SPD | 92 AGI | 92 ACC | 80 CAR | 77 BTK
Back up back with potential to develop into a decent runner.
Key Needs
The Bears have several holes to fill on the offensive side of the ball before the beginning of training camp.
Most importantly the Bears need another quarterback. It is unclear whether the Bears will allow Rusty Smith to start again this season, or if they can pick up a veteran to help bring him along this season. With cap space being tight, it looks as if Smith will be thrown into the lions den again.
The Bears are also in need of two to three offensive linemen, mainly tackles. Maxwell is comfortable allowing the current starters to remain in their place, but will look at veterans if they can be acquired cheaply.
After cutting Carey Davis, and drafting a raw player, the Bears will be looking to sign a veteran to be a blocking back this season.
Finally, Maxwell would like to pick up one more tall athletic wide receiver prior to the start of the season.
Depth Chart Battles
CB: The only guaranteed spot goes to second year corner Chris Cook. Fred Bennett, Stanford Routt, and Phillip Buchanon will all battle for the second starting spot, and for position in nickle and dime packages.
DT: Having four very similar players, this one will come down to performance. The Bears will likely try to put all four guys to use in various packages this season, hoping to key guys fresh and use each to their abilities. Marcus Harrison and recently draft Chris Hamilton seem to have the early lead to start.
Season Outlook
The Bears front office seems to be very excited about the upcoming season. They have improved what was one of the best defenses in the league last season, and will have at least nine of the same starters as last season. Maxwell feels he has one of the most physically gifted secondaries in the league, and while many of these players are young, Maxwell fully expects them to step up this season. With so many questions on offense, the defense will need to carry the team as they did last season.
The biggest questions will be on the offensive side of the ball. QB Rusty Smith raises huge questions, and it will be interesting to see if he develops into a decent starter this season. HB Matt Forte will be the key piece of the offense, if he can improve upon last season and carry the load, then the Bears will be successful. The offensive line is still very inexperienced, and will need to step up to give Smith time in the pocket and also to open up things for Forte. If they can improve, the Bears offense will surprise a lot of people. Maxwell is still in pursuit of one wide receiver, and rumor has it he has targeted a player whom also went to Baylor University.
The Bears feel very comfortable with their special teams players. Robbie Gould is one of the better kickers in the league, and newly acquire punter Daniel Sepulveda, a graduate of Baylor, has the full confidence of Maxwell.
In a division that had both of the teams in last years NFC title game, its hard to say whether the Bears will be able to improve upon last seasons 7-9 campaign. Many feel it is the toughest division in the league, with very experienced and historically successful GM's. Maxwell is the last remaining GM in the division to not have a title, but feels he has a defense that can make them competitive. With the Vikings losing several key components from last seasons championship team, and the Packers moving several players, Maxwell likes his chances. |
